The influence of motocross on the beginnings of both BMX and mountain biking is impossible to overstate.
Kids on bikes, emulating their moto-heroes, is the very foundation of Bicycle Motocross.
At the very same time, adventurous riders on old balloon-tire Schwinns were pushing their bikes up & down mountains in search of good times, inadvertently creating a new sport. Early on, these pioneers of what became “mountain biking” adopted grips, handlebars, control levers and cables directly from the off-road motorcycle world. It worked!
So when it came to creating some of the first dedicated off-road bicycle tires, it made perfect sense to mimic a motocross tire. Whether it was about imitating an aesthetic or realizing a perceived benefit, many of the first and best off-road bicycle tires were indeed inspired by motocross knobbies. The Mitsuboshi Comp 2.
