The influence of motocross on the beginnings of both BMX and mountain biking is impossible to overstate.
Kids on bikes, emulating their moto-heroes, is the very foundation of Bicycle Motocross.
Concurrently elsewhere, adventurous riders were hefting old Schwinns up, down and around mountains in search of good times, inadvertently creating a new sport. These pioneers of “mountain biking” sought out and adopted motorcycle equipment for it’s durability, lifting grips, handlebars, control levers and cables directly from the off-road motorcycle world. It worked!
So when it came to creating some of the first dedicated off-road tires, it made perfect sense to mimic a motocross tire. Whether it was about imitating an aesthetic or realizing a perceived benefit, many of the first and best off-road bicycle tires were indeed inspired by motocross knobbies. The Mitsuboshi Comp 2.
